How do i become a games developer?

I would like to start making my own games but i don't know where to start. I have no experience in programing except for "basic" back on my C64 and spectrum. I am looking to start with some free(or cheap)software to make mobile phone apps/games. Also any good online courses for the more advanced stuff as i cant do college/uni as i don't want to leave the security of my current job. Thanks in advance for any help..
